Rehabilitation Engineering Analysis Laboratory @ KMRREC

The Rehabilitation Engineering Analysis Laboratory (REAL) is located in West Orange, New Jersey, contiguous with the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation – West Orange clinical center. REAL has approximately 1850 square feet of laboratory and office space.

  • REAL Biomechanics: This research facility is used for studies on postural control in standing subjects. It includes motion analysis equipment, a dynamic perturbation platform, force sensing platforms, and electromyography instrumentation. This area also has an examination and setup area.
  • REAL Biomaterials Testing: This resource is a focal point for testing of tissues, man-made materials, joints, and prosthetic devices. The Planar Testing Apparatus (PTA), a multi-axis materials testing system developed by Dr. Edwards, has unique capabilities for this work.
  • REAL Computer Modeling: REAL has multiple software and hardware resources for computational analyses and dynamic simulation.
  • REAL Bioinstrumentation: This resource provides facilities for sensor design and development, and signal processing for the measurement and analysis of physiological signals. The lab supports embedded systems development of portable wireless devices using real-time operating systems to bring the latest in low-power, micro-miniature technologies to the rehabilitation field.
